Author Q&A + Giveaway - Jaci Burton (Play-by-Play Series)

I am very excited to welcome Jaci Burton to As the Pages Turn today.  Jaci is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling, award winning author of over 50 books. She lives in Oklahoma and spends a fair amount of time on the back of her husband’s Harley, where she often gets lost plotting her next story as the warm (and sometimes cold) breeze whips her face. She loves gardening, reality television, is a sucker for romantic comedies, and completely loses track of time when reading a great book. She’s a total romantic and longs for the happily ever after in every story, which you’ll find in all her books.

Jaci's newest release is called The Perfect Play.  I think the cover of this book has to be one of the hottest cover I've ever seen.  When I saw the cover of this book I had to get Jaci here to discuss this book.  Not only is the cover hot the book is set around the football world.  This book combines my two love of football and romance.  I enjoyed this book and I'm excited to have Jaci here today to answer some questions.  Stick around until the end of the Q&A session for a chance to win a copy of The Perfect Play. Also click HERE to see the real model Jed Hill who is on the cover of The Perfect Play.  He's my Monday Man Candy for this week!

*************************************

Ing:  Hey Jaci, welcome!  For those not familiar or not aware of your newest release The Perfect Play (aka freaking hot lickable cover) can you give us some details about the book and what can readers expect from this book, especially the sexing..lol?

Jaci: Thank you! The Perfect Play is about a hot shot NFL quarterback who lives his life in the limelight. There’s nothing he can’t have, until he meets the one woman he wants who wants nothing to do with his lifestyle. This book is hot, sexy and emotional and centered by two dynamic characters who both want the same things—they just don’t know it when they first meet.

Ing:  Mick Riley is the hero of The Perfect Play.  He’s the star quarterback and a known playboy.  Did you have any particular quarterback in mind either in the pro or college, you molded Mick after?

Jaci: No. Mick is a figment of my very vivid imagination.

Ing:  Why are Mick and Tara Lincoln (heroine of TPP) perfect for each other?  What about them individually draws them to one another?  Why do you think the readers will fall in love with this couple?

Jaci: For Mick, Tara is everything he’s never had. He’s used to women throwing themselves at him, and Tara doesn’t want anything to do with him. She’s sweet, dedicated to her job and her son and she doesn’t want to be in the limelight, but she likes him for him, not for what he can do for her. That intrigues him and makes him want to pursue her. For Tara, Mick is generally a nice guy wrapped up in one delicious hot package, and she simply doesn’t know what to do about him, because he refuses to go away. And she really doesn’t want him to even if he doesn’t fit in to the current plan of her life. The readers will root for this couple because the chemistry between them is clear from page one, but beyond that there’s an emotional connection, which is far more interesting than merely the physical.

Ing: What was a scene that stood out or was memorable for you when writing The Perfect Play?  Why did this scene stand out for you?

Jaci: Every scene in the book builds upon the previous one. But there’s one I particularly enjoy, where Mick asks Tara why she doesn’t want to see him again, and he asks her if it’s because the sex was bad and she just stares at him open mouthed in shock like he’s insane. Mick confuses her and challenges her neat and tidy plan for her life. It made me laugh to write that scene because I like the way Mick teases Tara.

Ing:  Was there any special research that you had to do to write this book?  I know you are a Sooners fan so I’m assuming you knew enough about football basics but was there more research you had to do.  If so was there anything interesting that you discovered during your research? (whispering under breath..please say you got to visit some football locker rooms while they were changing..please say that..lol

Jaci: Football locker rooms? Ha. I should be so lucky. I did research on Tara’s job as an event planner, and though I know football inside and out I wanted to make sure I did get some of the nitty gritty details right so I did do some football research. I also did some in depth research on Mick’s agent, Elizabeth’s job.

Ing: The Perfect Play is the first book in your new contemporary series Play-by-Play, what was your inspiration for The Perfect Play?  How did this book and series come about?  How many books are you planning for this series?

Jaci:  I knew I wanted to do a new series. I just wasn’t sure what I wanted to write about. I actually give all the credit to the oh so talented and amazing author Maya Banks for giving me the idea. I was brainstorming with her about what to write and we were tossing around different ideas. She suggested sports, and voila. Here we are. So she gets all the credit for the sports idea.

Ing:  Can you give us a glimpse or tell us a bit about the next book in the Play-by-Play series?  What can the readers expect?

Jaci: Oh, I can’t tell you how much fun I had writing Changing The Game, book 2 in the Play-by-Play series. Elizabeth is in a lot of trouble, and I know readers hate her for what she did to Tara. Gavin isn’t too happy with her, either. But Changing The Game is Gavin and Elizabeth’s story, and I promise Elizabeth will be redeemed in this book and you’ll fall madly in love with her. I loved this book and I loved writing Gavin and Elizabeth’s story.

Ing:  Now the most important question of all...did you get to help during the cover shoot for this cover..lol?  I swear that is hands down the most visually appealing cover ever.  I molested my copy several times!  Now my copy probably feels cheap!  Did you expect such a HUGE drool fest when your cover was revealed?  What was your reaction when you first saw it?  And how can I get in on the next cover shoot?

Jaci: Am I not the luckiest author on the face of the earth? And I could only wish to have been present for that cover shoot. Jed Hill is an amazing model, and perfect (ha! There’s that word again) for the cover of The Perfect Play. Sadly, I had nothing to do with it. I just asked for a hot sports guy on the cover, and the incredibly talented Berkley Art Department delivered.

When I got the cover in my email, I think I might have cried, because truly it’s the best cover I’ve ever had.

And as soon as I figure out how to get in on a cover shoot, I’ll be sure to let you know. ;-)

Ing:  Now on to questions about you.  We want to know more about Jaci Burton.   Who are some auto buy authors that you read now?

Jaci: I have SO many favorite authors I could take over this Q&A with my list. But here’s a few:

Anything Nora Roberts writes, Jill Shalvis, Julie James, Nalini Singh, Maya Banks, Shannon Stacey, Roxanne St Claire, Lora Leigh, Stephanie Tyler and Larissa Ione

Ing:  Which of your heroines would you say you are the most like and why?  If you could be one of them for a day which heroine would you be?

Jaci: I am nothing like my heroines. They’re all unique in their own way. I make them up in my head and breathe life into them, but they aren’t me at all.  I love the individuality they represent, just as we are all individual and unique.

Now if I could be one of them for a day, right now I’d choose Tara from The Perfect Play, because then I could have Mick. Heh.

Ing:  In your bio you stated that you’ve always wanted to write for Harlequin and that you recently got contracted for them under MIRA (congratulations BTW).  What was your reaction?  Where were you, when you got the news that one of your dreams was finally fulfilled and what did you do to celebrate?

Jaci: Yes! I’m so excited to be writing for MIRA! And thank you!
I was sitting at my desk writing (like always) when my agent gave me the news.  My husband and I went out to dinner to celebrate.  I’m always up for a celebratory dinner out, so yay!

Ing:  Any movies you’ve seen lately that you would recommend? Or TV shows that you love right now and don’t ever miss?

Jaci: I really loved Inception. A very thought provoking, mind bending film with incredible special effects.

I also loved Despicable Me. We love kid movies around here, even though the kids are grown and gone. Important to keep the child within you alive and well. Kid movies make us laugh. Despicable Me was adorable and funny.

I’m a TV show addict. I watch a lot of television. I won’t even give you the list of all the shows I watch because you’d probably be appalled and wonder when I have time to write. But some of my favorites are How I Met Your Mother, The Big Bang Theory, Parenthood and The Good Wife.  I find those are some excellent shows that I would never want to miss.

Ing:  If you could go back to your younger self when you were first starting out in the writing industry, what would be the one advice you would give yourself?

Jaci: Heh. I wasn’t exactly younger when I first started writing since it’s only been 10 years, but I don’t think I’d change anything about the journey that brought me to where I am right now.  Maybe to relax a little and enjoy the journey more.

Ing:  If you weren’t writing what else would you be doing right now?

Jaci: Probably a lot more reading.

Ing:  Thank you for your time today!  I really appreciate you answering all these questions.  I am so happy you could stop by today and spend some time here!  I can’t wait for Gavin’s book.   Any last words you want to say or any questions you have for the readers?

Jaci: Thank you SO much for inviting me! I’m so glad to be here.
I’d love to know the readers thoughts about The Perfect Play if they’ve read it already. If they haven’t, what intrigues them about the book?

Here is the cover and blurb of the book you could possibly win.  Isn't it pretty?

Book #1 of the Play-by-Play series
Cover Blurb:

Football pro Mick Riley is an all-star, both on the field and in the bedroom. But a sexy, determinedly single mom just might be the one to throw him off his game...

For years Mick has been taking full advantage of the life available to a pro athlete: fame, fortune, and a different girl in every city. But when he meets and beds confident, beautiful event planner Tara Lincoln, he wants much more than the typical one-night stand. Too bad Tara's not interested in getting to know football's most notorious playboy any better.

As the single mother of a teenage son, the last thing Tara needs is the jet-set lifestyle of Mick Riley; even though their steamy and passionate one-night stand was unforgettable. Tara's life is complicated enough without being thrust into the spotlight as Mick's latest girl du jour. Tara played the game of love once and lost big, and she doesn't intend to put herself out there again, especially with a heartbreaker like Mick.

But when Mick sets his mind to win, nothing will stop him. And he has the perfect play in mind.

Here is the next book in this series!  Book #2 of the Play-by-Play series.  This book isn't available until August 2, 2011
Cover Blurb:

Most people play by the rules. Gavin and Liz aren't most people...

Win at any cost. That's always been the mantra of sports agent Liz Darnell. When she carries things too far and risks losing her number-one client, baseball pro Gavin Riley, Liz realizes that she'll have to work extra innings to win him back. It might not be too much of a stretch. She's had a thing for this player's moves since she first laid eyes on him, and by the looks of it, he wants her just as bad.

Gavin's more than ready—especially when Liz is offering herself as part of the bargain. And as much of her as Gavin wants. For added thrills, he decides to throw a little curve ball Liz's way to see just how far she's truly willing to go to keep him as a client. But when love unexpectedly enters the playing field, neither Liz nor Gavin are ready for the biggest game-changer of them all.

I have not read the book but what intrigues me is the cover. Yes I admit Jed Hill there I said it.
My questions for Jaci - Have you met Jed, what's he like, does he look as yummy in person as he does on the cover, how does he get his abs like that? I realize now that these are not the question I maybe should be asking but it's not my fault really it's Jed Hills him and his abs.
A better question did you have any say in the cover was it your idea or did you just ok what was shown to you?

Good morning Ing and Jaci. I have not read this book as of yet. The cover first catches my eye and then the summary catches my interest. Mick, is used to having it all and getting want he wants. Then he finds the one person he wants and can't have. That's a recipe for a great story!

Happy Valentines Day to one and all!

That cover stopped me in my tracks, which is saying something. I also love sports and am going to read anything where one of the characters is a professional athlete.

I haven't read the book yet, but yeah, I'd get it just for the cover. LOL! But I'm also interested in the story. I like the fact that Tara doesn't want anything to do with him. That just cracks me up!

I haven't read the book yet (I'm on a budget so only can buy one or two every couple of weeks and this one's on the list), but I was attracted to the cover and the storyline and the author. I like Jaci's work, no matter the subgenre and I'm curious to see how she puts the story together with sports (heck, sports stars are people too!). How did you pick your sports? I see the first is about football and the second is baseball, what sport will be the third? As I said, I'm on a budget so if you want to send me a copy, I'm cool with that! :)

HI everyone and Happy Valentine's Day! I hope you're all having a great day, and that wherever you are today, there's chocolate.

A big thanks to Ing for letting me guest on her blog!

Thanks for all your questions so far! Here are the answers:

1. No, I've never met Jed Hill, the cover model for The Perfect Play. I wish. He's quite gorgeous. I do, however, have a 3 foot sized poster of the cover at my house. Rawrrrrr.

2. As far as involvement in the cover process, I conference with my editor and we discuss what I'd like on the cover. I asked for a hot sports guy. I think they delivered, didn't they? ;-)

3. Do I like football? I love football. It's one of my favorite sports. I love college football and pro football both. I'm a big fan of the Oklahoma Sooners college team and the St. Louis Rams NFL team. But we watch a lot of the other teams play, too.

4. How did I choose my sports? I like to write about what I know. Fortunately, I like a lot of sports. My dad was a big sports fan, so I grew up with sports in the house and one of my sons played sports growing up. Football and baseball mainly, so I've always followed those. But I also love hockey, NASCAR, basketball, soccer and just about any Olympic sport there is.

5. Yes, the first book is about football and the second book is about baseball. Which sport will the third book be about? Hockey. After that I haven't decided.

Thanks for all the questions! I'll be back a bit later to see if there are anymore

Happy Valentine's Day
I haven't read The Perfect Play yet, but the thing that makes me want to is the fact that Mick finds himself in a situation where he can't easily get what he wants. I want to find out more about Tara and her son. Of course the cover is just great :)

Hi, Jaci! What intrigues me BESIDES the cover? I am intrigued by the fact that the heroine is a single mother of a teenage son.

And this line from the blurb really hooked me: "But when Mick sets his mind to win, nothing will stop him. And he has the perfect play in mind."

The next book in the series sounds great, too. I really enjoy books that have sports heroes.

Happy Valentine's Day, everyone!

*fans self* My these covers are HOT!!

I gotta agree with you, Jaci, INCEPTION was awesome. Such an intriguing concept. And DESPICABLE ME was hilarious! I loved the fart gun. My husband and I had to rewind and replay that scene about 5 times. We enjoy fart humor. Who doesn't?

Congrats on signing with MIRA!

Answer: I haven't read the book but what intrigues me? Well, I gotta say I need the book for the cover. Yes, that's shallow but I simply must have it. :) You want more? Alright, well I also can't refuse a sexy athlete who can get any girl but the one he wants. Makes for a good read.

I have read the book. The cover draws you in first of course. It's a awesome cover. I liked the chemistry between Mick and Tara. I was rooting for them right from the beginning and both had things to overcome about themselves. I love how Mick took right to Tara son and wanted to protect him and be there for him. Can't wait for the next book. Excerpt to Book 2 is at the end of The Perfect Play just to tease you lol

Hi Jaci...thanks for dropping by today! I'm holding you to the cover shoot thing. If you go you better take me! LOL!

I'm almost done with The Perfect Play and I'm loving it. I love when Tara calls him a Man Whore too funny! Not sure how you will redeem Liz cause I wanted to smack her. The little teaser at the end sounds promising. I want Gavin right now.

Question - Will Jenna Riley get her own book? I'm thinking since she doesn't want anything to do with a sports guy it's only fitting you make her end up with an athlete..hehehe!

Glad to know the third book is a hockey one. I notice a Ty Anderson on your page about this series...me thinks that's the hero!

Good afternoon & Happy Valentine's Day.
I LOVED The Perfect Play. I'd have to say it is one of my favorite books of this year (I've probably read about 25 or so books so far). I read it all in one sitting. The cover did intrigue me but as I downloaded the book, the cover is -unfortunately - a non-issue.Tara and Mick were amazing characters. Such chemistry. Terrific!
Being a huge sports fan & thus of sports romances made this story all that much better. And having what I call "B&B"addictions(Books & Baseball) well, I truly can't wait for Changing the Game!
Fabulous stuff Jaci! Thank you!

Hi everyone and thanks for your comments and questions.

More answers:

1 - Yes, Jenna will have her own book!

2 - What male character do I see myself with? None of them. My heroes all belong to their heroines, and my heroines don't like to share. ;-)

3 - What books have I read that I'll never forget?

The Flame and The Flower by Kathleen Woodiwiss, because it was the first romance I ever read, and got my started on my love of reading romance.

The Only series by Elizabeth Lowell, because she was one of the first authors to really write sensual romance well and I'm such a huge fan of her work. Plus I love that series so much. I have tattered copies on my bookshelf.

Naked in Death by J. D. Robb because it's the first book in the In Death series and it hooked me. I'm still working my way through this series. I'm behind--like way behind on all the books in this series, but I think Nora Roberts is genius in being able to carry a series this long with this many books with the same characters and do it so amazingly well.

Hello Jaci and Ing!

Mick sounds like a nice guy indeed *sigh* and of course it doesn't hurt that he looks like that fine specimen on the cover (OMG xD).
Well I'm intrigued my the book because it sounds like a contemporary historical romance! And I looove those:D Mick and Tara sound like two lost souls in the world and the book tells the story of how they'll find each other..plus the cover looks like that(I can't get over it...)so, I'm very, VERY intriged. But wait...that's a real guy?...Jed Hill? Wow. Wow. I thought it was a drawing or a very photoshoped image! Holy mother of God...

Jaci, keep asking for hot guys on your covers, please. You're doing your readers a big favor! Love you!xD

Hey everyone! Thanks again for all your wonderful comments, and for reading my books!

Answers to questions:

1. Do my family members read my books? My husband does read some of my books when I ask him to edit them for me. Usually the suspense books because he has a great mind for plot, weaponry, action and kill scenes and overall suspense arcs. But he'll read any book I ask him to. My adult sons won't go anywhere near my books because they have sex in them. Heh. Various family members such as cousins and nieces have read my books. Yay!

2. What is the funniest comment I've received from a fan? Good question. I did get one email from someone who wrote me a very lengthy email about how I should write their story, and then told me their life story...in gory, graphic, explicit detail. It was very TMI lol and since I don't write other people's biographies it fell outside out what I do.

3. Why did I choose a sports theme? I love sports, purely and simply.

Thanks for all your great questions, and thanks again to Ing!

The cover caught my attention, Jed Hill *sigh* but also the whole sports aspect, while I am more of a baseball girl, the blurb had me hooked!

All the best for your release!

I haven't read The Perfect Play, but what immediately catches my eye is the model on the cover of course! What a perfect body Jed Hill has! LOL
Would really love to read this book. I hope I win *crosses fingers & toes*

I have not read this book yet although I know I want to. The cover really caught my attention when I noticed it on another website. It is one of the best covers I have seen lately.

Hello Jaci and Ing,
As usual I'm late for the party, still working on the broken pipe mess and migraines are slowing me down. I haven't read the book yet but I did get the bookplate from the chat group that Fatin sent out and I love it. I love the excerpt that I've read and it sounds like a really really good story. I also can join the I Love That Cover fan club.

I haven't read the book yet but it's definitely on my wishlist. Anyway, I'm a huge sports fan and I love reading books with both romance and a sports theme on them.

Hi Jaci!

I'm an impulse buyer so when I see a gorgeous cover look that, I'll buy it! So answering the question, yes it was the cover but it was also more than that. I want to know just exactly what is the 'perfect play' Mick has in mind to convince Tara is the one he needs :D

I love it when the hero pursues the heroine!
