Blog Tour: Author Q&A + Giveaway – Get Laid by Annabeth Leong

Ing: Hey Annabeth!  Welcome to ATPT! Can you tell the readers a little bit about Get Laid? What can they expect plot, pace, sex, etc from this book?

Annabeth: Hi! Thanks for having me! Get Laid is the story of a married couple who are going crazy due to home renovations. To reconnect and get away from that source of stress, they embark on a series of sexy adventures, many of which result in hilarious mishaps. The plot is about the two of them redefining what marriage means to them five years in, and it’s a fast, light read. There’s lots and lots of varied sex because I planned the book around the different locations where they try to find time alone and the challenges and benefits of each. I came into erotic romance having done erotica first, so my sex scenes are very explicit.

Ing: Can you tell us about the hero, Jason Wu? What about Jason, do you think will capture the reader’s heart and make them love him?

Annabeth: Jason is a very fun guy. He’s fit, willing to get out and try things, and he likes to make jokes to ease tension. I think all those are attractive qualities. Underneath that, though, he’s thinking very seriously about how to be a good man, husband, and, potentially, father. I was drawn to him especially because of that inquiry operating beneath the surface.

Ing: Now tell us a bit about the heroine, Eliza Wu? What about Eliza, do you think will draw the readers in and make them love her?

Annabeth: Eliza also likes to have fun. She’s very loyal and hard-working. Eliza is struggling to balance those two elements in her life. She knows fairly well how to be upfront with Jason, but she struggles to protect herself from her very demanding boss. I hope that readers will identify with the issues she’s facing, and that they’ll like her sincerity and goodheartedness.

Ing: Why are Jason & Eliza perfect for each other? What about them individually makes them so drawn to each other? Why do you think the readers will fall in love with these two?

Annabeth: These people get along first and foremost because they like each other and know how to have fun together. There’s a lot of playful warmth between them that I loved writing. Romance about an existing couple is interesting to write because you’re picking up in the midst of a relationship. Jason and Eliza are changing, and they both obviously want to change together. I hope readers will cheer how bravely they face change, and how committed they are to turning toward each other.

Ing: What was a scene that stood out or was memorable for you when writing Get Laid? Why did this scene stand out for you?

Annabeth: My favorite scene is the one in which Jason and Eliza try to have sex in the car. She admits some of her fantasies to him, and it’s sweet and hot. But… car sex is really difficult and awkward, so they’re also banging their knees against the parking brake and struggling to get into position. After I wrote that scene, I thought I’d really captured the sexy but light-hearted tone I was looking for. Ideally, I’d like readers to be turned on, but I’d also like for them to laugh.

Ing: I like hearing the back story about how a book or series came about. Can you tell me where the idea for Get Laid came from? Is this book going to be part of a series or is it strictly a stand alone?

Annabeth: This is a stand alone. It was also a turning point for me as a writer. Up until this book, I’d done short stories and novellas, but I really wanted to try something longer. I didn’t know if I could sustain interest and tension at length, so I thought a lot about what might work for me. Eventually, I decided that what I like to read and write the most are meaningful sex scenes—scenes that are hot, but that also signify change for the characters. I designed a plot that I thought would allow me to focus on the transformative power of sex (a heavy word for a light-hearted book, I know, but I do believe that). Once I had the outline (which involved a very fun time making a list of the settings I could use), the words sailed out. I’ve written five more novels since then, so I really did learn something.

Ing: Can you tell us what else we can look forward to from you? Could you give us the 411 on these upcoming projects?

Annabeth: I still love to write short stories, and I’m part of some really great collections lined up for next year, including Best Erotic Romance 2014, Best Bondage Erotica 2014, and Can’t Get Enough, all from Cleis Press. I’ve got a book lined up for Ellora’s Cave’s upcoming lesbian erotic romance series, Hot Pink. It’s called Heated Leather Lover, and it’ll be out in June 2014. In August 2014, the delicious UK publisher Sweetmeats Press will publish my full-length erotic novel Untouched, which is about a woman’s struggles to reconcile her sexual desires with the fact that she can’t stand to be touched by another person. Readers should know that my work ranges from sweet erotic romance, such as Get Laid, to extremely kinky erotica such as Untouched. I read in the same range (and also sometimes sweeter than what I write), so I figure at least some other people share my eclectic taste. I would, however, encourage readers to pay attention to the descriptions of my work before buying it to be sure they’re getting the type of story they want to read.

Ing:  Now on to questions about you.  We want to know more about Annabeth. Who are some auto buy authors that you read now?

Annabeth: Jocelyn Dex is the most recent addition to my auto buy list (paranormal erotic romance about demons). I also love Alison Tyler, Sommer Marsden, Paisley Smith, Radclyffe, Lana Fox, Giselle Renarde, Cecilia Tan, Laura Antoniou, Janine Ashbless, Lisabet Sarai, Isabel Sharpe, Kendra Leigh Castle, Kristine Kathryn Rusch (and all her pseudonyms), and so many more people than I could possibly name. I spend just about all of my disposable income on books, so I auto buy way more than I should.

Ing: If you could be a heroine of any book for one day who would you be and why?

Annabeth: I’m going to jump genres and return to my youth. I always wished I could experience the awesome transition from pampered noble girl to carefree sailor that Charlotte Doyle undergoes in Avi’s True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle. Also, I love boats, and it would be great to spend a day on one.

Ing: If you could hang out for a day with one author who would it be and why?

Annabeth: I’ve been lucky enough to actually do this with some people I admire at events such as Ellora’s Cave’s Romanticon, and it’s been awesome, in part because it lets me hang out with lots of authors for a day. I will cheat a bit and answer your question by saying I would love to go to Eroticon in the UK so that I could also meet and hang out with my author friends from across the pond.

Ing: Annabeth, thanks so much for stopping by today! I really appreciate you answering all these questions. Do you have any last words or questions you would like to pose to the readers of this blog?

Annabeth: Thanks so much for having me! Since I wound up talking about this issue so much, I’m curious about whether your readers prefer to read in a very specific area (i.e. time travel erotic romances set in Scotland), over a wide range, or something in between.

Renovators have invaded the home of Jason and Eliza Wu. The two haven’t seen a clean surface in months and, even worse, haven’t had a moment to themselves. With stress in their work lives added to stress at home, the couple desperately needs to have some fun. Jason and Eliza embark on a bold plan to make love and get out of the house—at the same time. Through a series of hot adventures and wild mishaps in the car, at Eliza’s mother’s house, on the top floor of the library and everywhere in between, Jason and Eliza find that not only can they survive renovations, they might even be sorry when they’re over.

A Romantica® contemporary erotic romance from Ellora’s Cave

“What are we going to do? We still don’t have anywhere to go. I’d suggest home, but I think our bedroom is a giant gutted hole in the floor at the moment.”

“I’d go to a motel right now if I hadn’t just been complaining to you about how we couldn’t afford takeout.”

“I thought you were hungry. Starving.”

“Some things are more important than food,” Jason said solemnly.

Eliza found herself grinning at him. Considering that she’d wanted to tear him a new one when she’d gotten in the car, it did seem Jason was on to something here. She wanted to lie down and she wanted a shower, but the idea of his hands all over her body sounded pretty good too. That might be just the messy, sweaty relief that could make her forget her worries for a brief but necessary period. “Okay, so where, then?”

Jason twisted the key in the ignition. The car’s motor ground to life. “I was thinking right here.”

“In the parking lot to my job?”

“No,” he said. He wiggled his eyebrows suggestively. “How about in the car?”

“Not while it’s moving.”

“No, of course not. Didn’t people in the fifties do this thing called ‘parking’? Which really meant ‘making out’?”
