Blog Tour: Author Q&A + Giveaway – Broken Ever After by Natalie Graham

Posted by Ing on 18 October, 2013 // ★★ 12 Comments ★★

Ing: Hi Natalie!  Welcome to the blog! Could you tell the readers a little bit about Broken Ever After?  What can they expect plot, pace, sex, etc from this book?

Natalie: Broken Ever After is about a student falling for one of her teachers. Olivia has had a crush on Mr Matthews since he started teaching at her school and of course they wait until the last three weeks of school to let each other know exactly how they feel about each other. Those last three weeks are hell for them as they try to keep their relationship hidden, with Olivia’s ex-boyfriend lurking, trying to out the couple. Just as you think everything is rosy, the script is completely flipped and nothing is what you think it was.

Ing: Can you tell us a about the hero Jamie Matthews? What about Jamie, do you think will draw the readers in and make them love him?

Natalie: Jamie Matthews *sigh* He’s twenty-six and has almost every girl falling at his feet in the hallways of the school. He’s very charming. He’s cute with a sense of humor and being hot helps too. Jamie is very protective of Olivia too, so I hope that his caring nature will make readers love him.

Ing: Now tell us a bit about the heroine Olivia Stevens? What about Olivia, do you think will draw the readers in and make them love her?

Natalie: Olivia is your typical eighteen year old girl. She loves music, movies and men. Well, one man in particular. She’s quite reserved, she doesn’t like to get into trouble which is what makes hers and Jamie’s relationship so hard on her. Olivia is the ‘adult’ in their relationship; she is the one that tells them when to stop, that it’s wrong and they need to think clearly about their situation. She is older than her years but you don’t find out why straight away, when you do you find out that she’s tormented by demons from her past and wants nothing more than for Jamie to take them all away. Despite how her childhood has aged her, she’s still just a young girl embarking on her first serious relationship and she’s scared.

Ing: Why are these two perfect for each other? What about them individually makes them so drawn to each other? Why do you think the readers will fall in love with this couple?

Natalie: Jamie’s caring nature is perfect for Olivia’s need to be cared for. She needs someone that will love her for who she is, and isn’t going to take advantage of her or her family. They share a mutual love of football (I’m English, football = soccer), however they follow rival clubs; that is what bonded them in the beginning as they teased each other over Jamie’s team beating Olivia’s.

I think people will fall in love with them because although it’s a student/teacher relationship, it’s not ‘seedy’; they have to hide at the start of their relationship but the sneaking around behind everyones back is not the focus of the story. The focus is on how much Olivia loves Jamie, and her sacrifice of letting out the demons she holds on to, in order to let Jamie fully into her life.

Ing: What was a scene that stood out or was memorable for you when writing Broken Ever After? Why did this scene stand out for you?

Natalie: That’s quite a hard question to answer as the one I’m thinking of takes place quite far into the book, and I can’t say it without giving away lots so I’ll choose the scene where they are at Olivia’s leavers prom. Olivia is dancing with her friend Lily and her eyes connect with Jamie across the room. She’s singing along to a song, which calls to him telling him that she’s ready for the next step in their relationship- to be with him ‘fully’, and they finally can as she’s no longer his student. There is a release as she realizes that there doesn’t need to be any more hiding, they are finally free to be together. It stands out to me because I’ve felt trapped before, and that moment when you are finally able to breathe is remarkable.

Ing: I like knowing and hearing the back story about how a book or series came about. Can you tell me where the idea for Broken Ever After came from?  I know we’ve discussed this but can you let the readers know how many books will be in this series?

Natalie: Broken Ever After came to me in the middle of the night. I was pregnant with my second daughter and I was suffering terribly with anxiety so I didn’t sleep much. Reading became an escape to me, it helped me focus on something else so that I could calm myself and ward of a full blown attack. Eventually that stopped working for me. The last thing I’d read before going to bed one night was a ‘work in progress’ student/teacher romance and I just kept thinking ‘what would I do differently if I wrote something?’ That opening sequence kept me awake as I went over and over it, until I gave up on the idea of sleep, picked up my phone and started to write.

I plan for Broken Ever After to be a trilogy; Olivia and Jamie’s story is far from over and I hope to have that ready around March/April 2014.

Ing: Can you tell us what you have up your sleeve next? What else can we look forward to from you? Could you give the 411 on these upcoming projects?

Natalie: I have a story in the back of my mind that I’m excited to get started on after I finish with Olivia and Jamie, but that probably won’t be until 2015. I also have Jamie and Riley whispering in my ears too, saying that they want their say, so I’m considering writing novellas from them but again, they won’t be done until I’ve finished with the books that follow Broken Ever After. All I can say is that Riley has a LOT to say.

Ing:  Now on to questions about you.  We want to know more about Natalie.   Who are some auto buy authors that you read now?

Natalie: My auto buy authors are Colleen Hoover, Christina Lauren, Abbi Glines, and Jamie McGuire.

Ing: If you could be a heroine of any book for one day who would you be and why?

Natalie: Katniss Everdeen from The Hunger Games trilogy. Katniss is this fearless, total badass who gets to hang around with Gale Hawthorne (read Liam Hemsworth) and hunt with him. I can’t imagine I’d find much food following him around, but I’d happily go hungry for a day if I got to spend it with him.

(nodding head in agreement here…loves me some Liam)

Ing: Any movies you’ve seen lately that you would recommend? Or TV shows that you love right now and don’t ever miss?

Natalie: This is totally the wrong question to ask me (Seriously, it could take me all day to list them). I’m a huge, HUGE TV fanatic! English tv isn’t very good (IMO – don’t shoot me). I’m a big fan of The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, True Blood, The Vampire Diaries, Teen Wolf, Grey’s Anatomy, Arrow, White Collar, The Good Wife, Suits, Pretty Little Liars, Grimm… Ok, I’ll stop there. Although I will add that I’ve just started watching Sleepy Hollow and Once Upon a Time, and loving them! I don’t watch many movies but I love Marvel and DC films (Catwoman is my favorite character – I even have her on my shoes right now!) I also love watching romantic comedies.

Ing: Natalie, thanks so much for stopping by today! I really appreciate you answering all these questions. Do you have any last words or questions you would like to pose to the readers of this blog?

Natalie: I’d actually like to say a HUGE thank you to you for hosting the blog tour, you’ve been really amazing getting so many people involved! So – THANK YOU ING! XOXO (I totally read that in the Gossip Girl voice)

(throwing cyber kisses back at you)

To the readers, I’d like to give a big thank you to those of you that have read it already and to those that have it on their TBR. I love hearing what people think, so please feel free to message me with your thoughts and questions. I can’t always answer straight away (I’m a busy mum and wife) but I do always get back to everyone.

“You do know that you’re ten minutes late, right? That’s your time, not mine” I told him.

“Your time starts when I say it does, Miss Stevens” I hoped to God that he was joking. My eyes skimmed down to his lips as he smiled at me, taking in how soft and inviting they looked; nervously I chewed on my own as I followed him in to the classroom. He’d picked up my art folder and my bag and carried them in for me, landing them on the desk in front of his where I napped the day before. “Wow, what the hell do you have in that thing?” he asked when he put my bag down.

“Erm… Text books, water, keys, art stuff, my diary, mail sack of love letters, three changes of shoes, the kitchen sink.” I smiled sweetly at him.

“You keep a diary? And have enough admirers to need an entire mail sack?” He looked at me shocked.

“Why? Do you want to read it?” I smirked at him “and sadly not in regards to the mail sack… I have a special truck for those.” I grinned.

“ha-ha. I don’t know, it depends if there is anything about me in it?” he winked at me and sat down at his desk.

“You are on every page.” I sighed dreamily at him. Well he would be if I really had one. I was blushing again; I wish I could control that. I sat down at the desk and tried to avoid his gaze.

“And what do you say about me?” He enquired as he looked down over a student’s work.

“How much of an arse you are.”
