Changing Course by Aly Martinez
Series: Wrecked and Ruined, #1
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Release Date: January 29, 2014

I met Sarah Kate Erickson when I was 21 years old. I was lucky enough to keep her for seven years before a tragic accident stole her from me. She didn’t die, but sometimes I think it would have been easier if she had.

I lived in a haze for those four years after the accident. Catering to her every need, even though she hated the very sight of my face. I tried to hold on to her and the future that we were supposed to build together. But you can’t hold on to someone that doesn’t exist anymore.

It wasn’t until I met Jesse Addison, a barista at the local coffee shop, that I realized I didn’t just lose Sarah that tragic night, I lost myself as well. Jesse taught me how to let go of the past and learn to love again. But what happens when your past haunts your present and the woman you used to love refuses to accept the woman you can’t live without?

Changing Course – Excerpt

“I’m broken Jess, but I need you to hear these words before I go. Trust me, I know saying this makes me a selfish bastard, because I’ve seen you cry three times in the five days we have been together. But for me, these last few days have been an awakening. I now see the sun behind the fog, and it’s a damn good feeling.

“I’m sorry about all of this, I truly am. Please believe me, and think about what I’ve said. I can’t promise you anything more than tomorrow, but maybe one day, the fog will disappear leaving only sunny days ahead.” He doesn’t stall even a minute longer. He simply walks to the corner, cleans up the broken glass, then walks out the front door.

My Thoughts:
Brett Sharp was 21 years old when he met the love his life, Sarah Erickson at a dance bar. He spends the night with a drunken Sarah holding her hair while she worships the porcelain gods. The next day Brett gets to know a sober Sarah and instantly, he knows that she’s the one. They had seven wonderful years of marriage and then in one afternoon he lost her. The Sarah, the wife, he knew was no longer emotionally or mentally there. This new Sarah hates Brett and punishes him emotionally and verbally.

Four years later, Brett is just existing. He’s lived his life on autopilot, until an unexpected tiny barista name Jesse Addison steps into his life. Jesse works at the coffee shop that Brett and his best friend and detective partner, Caleb Jones frequent for coffee and breakfast. Caleb notices that Brett shows interest in Jesse. So when Jesse asks Brett out, Caleb decides to give his friend a push towards Jesse by accepting the invitation for Brett. Brett never expected Jesse or the feelings she awakens in him. Four years after Brett’s world was shatter he slowly awakens from the fog.

I really wanted to read this book when I first found out about it. Just reading the synopsis I could feel my heart breaking already for the hero.

Brett’s story was one huge heart wrenching, pull my hair and grab a tissue ride. Dear lord did my heart hurt for him. His loyalty to his past was something I admired and loathed at the same time. I understood his reasoning but at times I wanted to grab him and shake some sense into him. His character was easy to feel for. I felt like I was taking this journey with him. The confusion the guilt and the hope all of that I felt right along with him. You can’t help but love Brett’s character and root for him to grasp and find his happiness.

Now Jesse I liked her. She is not very confident and at times her self doubting got a little bit annoying to me. She was really quick to jump to some conclusions because of self doubt. But Jesse’s big heart, caring ways and the fact that she forgives easily, endeared her to me. She was put in a very complicated situation that was either going to crush her or lead to a once in a lifetime love. I liked Jesse’s journey from shy, self doubt to a woman with sass and confidence.

Brett and Jesse together made for some emotional read. These two had chemistry up the wazoo. Their interaction had me either giggling, frustrated or hot and bothered. I liked how Aly handled telling the readers about the last 4 years through flashbacks from Brett’s POV. The glimpse we get of how Brett’s life has been up until present will break your heart.

I loved the secondary characters in Changing Course. Caleb..oh Caleb I can’t wait to get your story. His story is going to be tissue worthy one too. Caleb was such a great friend in this story. I also enjoyed Brett and Jesse’s family. I’m hoping Jesse’s brother gets a story. Kara the dirty mouthed best friend of Jesse was a riot. She’s the kind of girl I’d like to party with. I’m hoping she gets a story.

I really enjoyed Changing Course and can’t wait to read more from this author. I definitely recommend this book and recommend you have some tissues on hand.

*About Aly*

I’m a 32 year old wife and stay at home mom to four kids under the age of five, including a set of twins. My life is crazy, which is probably why I drink entirely too much wine. Oh who am I kidding, I had a love affair with wine long before the kids came along.  I was born and raised in Savannah Georgia, but we recently moved to Chicago. Let me tell you, this southern girl was not ready for the cold weather up here!

I’m an avid reader, but I haven’t always been that way. A few years ago my sister loaned me her Nook Color, and it changed my life forever. In the span of about two years, I read over 500 books. My new-found love of reading led me to start a book blog with two of my best friends. (Insert shameless plug here: Through WZ Bookends, I’ve had the opportunity to meet some of the most amazing authors, bloggers, and readers out there. Now that I have taken the leap into writing my own book, they’ve all shown me endless amounts of encouragement and support.

While driving home from Walmart one day in late October, a story embedded itself in my head and would not let go. It spiraled out of control until I finally opened my laptop and started writing. This journey has been a wild ride filled with tears, hand cramps, and tons of laughs. I love company, so follow me at one of the social links below and join me aboard this crazy train!
